Satoshi Fujiwara (藤原聡志) is a Kobe-born, Berlin-based conceptual artist and photographer. Internationally recognised for his transdisciplinary and radical approach to photography. He initiates a pressing and critical action on the gazer, through the focal length set from portrayed subjects and the heterogeneous definition of his photographs, diverting from the standards of photo-journalism and an exclusively documentary dimension, thus producing a new emerging lexicon.
He exhibited internationally at key contemporary art and cultural institutions including Jameel Arts Centre Dubai, UAE, 2021; Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, Canada, 2019-2020; Fondazione Prada, Italy, 2020/2017; La Boverie (Palais des beaux-arts de Liège), Belgium, 2018; 21_21 Design Sight, Japan, 2018; Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany, 2016, among others. Fujiwara participated in several art and photography fairs, art festivals and biennials such as Biennale de l’Image Possible, La Boverie, Belgium, 2018; Photo London, Somerset House, UK, 2016; Paris Photo, Grand Palais, France, 2015; Art Souterrain, Palais des congrès de Montréal, Canada, 2018; Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam, Westergas, Netherland, 2015 among others.
He is a recipient of the Japan Photo Award 2014, selected by Mousse Magazine photo editor Stella Succi. Fujiwara was also nominated for several prizes including Foam Paul Huf Award, Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, 2018; Prix Pictet Japan Award, 2017; Outset, Unseen Photo Fair, Amsterdam 2015. He was selected as a participant in the K11 Group X ArtReview Artist-in-Residence Programme in Wuhan in 2024.
Fujiwara collaborated with various institutions and entities such as Issey Miyake, 2015; Deutsche Oper Berlin, 2016-2017; Amnesia Scanner, 2018; Sharjah Architecture Triennial, 2019; Balenciaga, 2020; Gr10k, 2021-2023 among others. During the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he remotely created a short visual essay Werewolves Playoffs together with German filmmaker and literary author Alexander Kluge, commissioned as part of Fondazione Prada’s Finite Rants program in 2020.
He published his first book Code Unknown, Satoshi Fujiwara, IMA, 2015. 5K CONFINEMENT: HD environment surface surveillance, Luigi Alberto Cippini, Fondazione Prada, 2015; HORSES, together with Yngve Holen, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, 2018.
