Satoshi Fujiwara is an artist, photographer based in Berlin. His work dissects the relationship between imaging and society, addressing the core of visual culture through critical examination of violence, stress, identity, and media coverage within contemporary landscapes. Diverging from the standards of photojournalism and an exclusively documentary dimension, Fujiwara creates a new emerging lexicon.
Fujiwara's works have been presented internationally at key contemporary art and cultural institutions including Jameel Arts Centre Dubai, UAE; Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, Canada; Fondazione Prada, Italy; La Boverie (Palais des beaux-arts de Liège), Belgium; 21_21 Design Sight, Japan; Deutsche Oper Berlin, Germany, among others. Fujiwara participated in several art and photography fairs, art festivals and biennials such as Biennale de l’Image Possible, La Boverie, Belgium; Photo London, Somerset House, UK; Paris Photo, Grand Palais, France; Art Souterrain, Palais des congrès de Montréal, Canada; Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam, Westergas, Netherland, among others.
Fujiwara's first photographic series Code Unknown, was awarded the Japan Photo Award in 2014. His work has also been nominated for several prestigious prizes, including the Foam Paul Huf Award at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam in 2018, the Prix Pictet Japan Award in 2017, and the Outset Unseen Photo Fair Amsterdam in 2015.
Fujiwara had collaborative projects with various institutions and entities such as Issey Miyake, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Amnesia Scanner, NikeLab X Matthew M Williams, Sharjah Architecture Triennial, Balenciaga, Salomon X Gr10k, among others. During the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he remotely created a short visual essay Werewolves Playoffs together with German filmmaker and literary author Alexander Kluge, commissioned as part of Fondazione Prada’s Finite Rants program.
He published his first book Code Unknown, Satoshi Fujiwara, IMA. 5K CONFINEMENT: HD environment surface surveillance, Luigi Alberto Cippini, Fondazione Prada; HORSES, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König. His works have appeared in numerous publications such as Dialogue—21 Artists Who Reshaped Contemporary Photography, Joanna Fu, Zhejiang Photographic Press; Why Art Photography?, Lucy Soutter, Routledge, UK; also in various art and cultural magazines includes Extra FOMU, Fotomuseum Antwerp, Blouin Artinfo, ArtAsiaPacific, WIRED, British Journal of Photography, Kaleidoscope, IMA Magazine, Chinese Photography Magazine, Tank, Vogue, King Kong, among others.
