Crowd Landscape, 2019
Satoshi Fujiwara brings exquisite techniques of historical painting to digital imagery. His hyperreal portrait of the young, the elderly and those protesting combine high-definition details of blemished skin and bleached hair with heavily saturated post-production techniques. They're often brutal yet sublime.
In his new commission for Age of You, Fujiwara's direct response to MOCA's industrial architecture is a vast, 72-foot-long photographic sculpture. Crowd Landscape consists of two sides and two scales. The giant faces multiply and overly-like an automated algorithm gone awry-charging the nocturnal crowd with unknown potential: democratic, violent or otherwise.
